Impersonation at onboarding is simple to attempt and expensive to miss: someone submits a genuine ID with someone else's face, or the same face turns up under two different identities. This free tool checks a selfie against the photo on an ID in seconds. It finds a face in each image, maps 68 facial landmarks, then runs a face-recognition network that converts each face into a 128-number descriptor. The distance between those two descriptors becomes your match score, alongside a landmark-geometry breakdown by region and quality checks on both photos. Everything — model included — runs inside your browser, so the photos themselves are never uploaded to any server, which matters when you are handling biometric data under the DPDP Act. Is the face match checker free?
Yes — match one selfie against one ID photo free. It runs in your browser with no signup.
Are my photos uploaded to a server?
No. Both photos stay on your device and are processed by JavaScript in the page. The only network request is the one-time download of the face-recognition model files from a public CDN to your browser — that is a download to you, not an upload of your images.
How does the face match score work?
A face-recognition neural network converts each detected face into a 128-number descriptor. The Euclidean distance between the two descriptors is the raw measure: small distance means the faces are alike. We map that distance to a 0–100 score with three bands — likely the same person, inconclusive, likely different people — and show you the raw distance too.
Does it detect a photo of a photo?
No. There is no liveness or spoof detection in this free tool, so a printed photo, a screen held up to a camera or a deepfake frame can pass. Live KYC needs liveness checks, which DocuExprt runs as part of its verification workflow.
Can I use this as legal proof of identity?
No. Treat it as a screening aid. Face-recognition accuracy varies with image quality, the age gap between the two photos, glasses, beards and demographic group, and published studies show error rates are not equal across groups. A person should always make the final identity decision.
Why did two photos of the same person score low?
Usually photo quality. A laminated ID photographed at an angle, a scan under 100 pixels wide, heavy shadows, sunglasses or a decade between the two pictures all push the distance up. Re-crop both images around the face, use the best available copy of the ID, and try again.
